The Happening Trailer - M Night Shyamalan

This teaser is not nearly as spooky or compelling, as the full-length trailer featured on the official movie site. This is mainly due to the implausible potrayal of Marky Mark Walberg as an academic authority of some sort, who waxes scientific about the mystery of missing bees. Ummm. Scary. Also...Cameron from Ferris Bueller? Come on now, people! What a weird choice to showcase such a weird guy for this type of genre...

Lots of Things Like This

I've been postponing my trek to see the Biennial. I'm a bit daunted by its scope and doubtful of the show's overall entertainment value. I decided to head down to the apexart gallery in Tribeca on Saturday, as an alternative. I'm glad I did! The writer, Dave Eggers, curated an exhibit called Lots of Things Like This. The show consists of some wonderfully irreverant, yet highly observant drawings from a wide variety of artists (Jean-Michel Basquiat, Marcel Duchamp, etc...). Eggers used only the following qualifiers, as he selected the pieces in the show:

1. An image
2. Some words (usually referring to the image)
3. A sense of humor

I found a series of drawings from Bulgarian artist, Nedko Solakov, to be particularly memorable. He uses words and images with equal measure to produce his art. His black and white drawings were made specifically for the show, which were insightful, sometimes poignant, amusing, and truthful.

The show ends on May 10.

Handsome Furs - Snakes on a Ladder

The Canadian rock duo, Handsome Furs, put on an entertaining show at the Bowery Ballroom last night. I was skeptical before the performance, because their sound is synth heavy and machine driven. Luckily, the hubby and wife team had such amazing chemistry on stage. She works the drum machine and synthesizer with style. He sings lead vocals and handles guitar. This track, Snakes on a Ladder (wasn't taken from last night), is my fave. I have a penchant for music that you can slit your wrists to... Opening act, Violens, was a treat. I could tell that they loved music and their influences were evident in the songwriting. At the end of the night, the first few rows of the audience were sprayed with Red Bull and vodka. Canucks DO have edge!!

Room with a Vudu!

In my mind, I want to watch "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie", but in my heart I just want to watch Top Chef re-runs. As a result, the Net-flix issued DVD of Bunuel's masterpiece has been sitting on top of my stereo speaker for an embarrassing 5 months. I need to shed this guilt and buy a box that delivers movies I want to see, when I want and where I want. Natch. A mere $399 to assuage a writhing intellectual conscience!

Philips and Swarovski have partnered up to produce a line of stylish tech pieces, called "Active Crystals" that appeal to the more "refined" tastes of women. I don't know if sparkly flash drives will grab the attention of every gal, but it made my eyes twinkle with envy! Slated for an August 2007 release date, rumor has it that this gorgeous gadget is only available in France on a limited basis this month. The way I see it, a bottle of Cristal offers a few hours of bubbles and buzz at a price of $200-350, and this piece of crystal will be tagged at around the same and last a digital lifetime! Who is ready to get their USB-ling on?
