This is a plug for my friend's site http://ratnerfilms.tumblr.com/ It's essentially a virtual raspberry to THE director of terrible, high-concept, popcorn sequels, in the form of Photoshop poster spoofs...
Love this Colombian artist and his round aesthetic... Both Sotheby's and Christie's are having Latin American Art Auctions this week, featuring some of Fernando Botero's pieces. The art is still on exhibition at Sotheby's till 1 PM... Here is another Botero sculpture commissioned for the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, near Falling Water and about 2 hours away from my home town:
National Geographic reports "...sky-watchers [in North America] are advised to venture out away from bright city lights between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. on the 17th, when they should see 30 to 50 meteors an hour." It's an annual show, so it's not a terrible loss if you miss it this year. I actually heard about this through FB. I don't think it's quite the "historic" celestial event that FB is purporting it to be, but I'm sure it will be worth staying up for if your view isn't marred by urban light pollution. I will probably not venture out of Manhattan to see it, but I do like the thought of falling stars cascading across the sky. PRETTY!
I was going to post an adorable video about a run-away panda, but this Weird Al/Rocketboom bit about auto-tune on the You Tubes was too funny to pass up. Guilty pleasure confession: I actually like auto-tune. Honestly, if I owned an I-phone, it would not be beyond me to make a $3 impulse purchase to get that dumb I am T-Pain app. I suppose the chuckle factor would wear thin after a day or two...
The first part of the video is a little boring, but wait for the parody part that Weird Al explains...
Oh, here is the panda video too...for Friday kicks! (Thanks Lina!)
The Carter is a new documentary about L'il Wayne that ran the festival circuit, screening at Berlin and Sundance. The trailer makes The Carter look like a serious, prestige film of some sort, but it's heading straight to DVD. Unfortunately, with its middling reviews, I'll be netflixing this as a rainy day alternative to re-runs of The Hills.
By turning usually unassuming and indistinct barcodes into visual confections, the Japanese have proven their knack to transform the mundane into something special and really f*cking cute...yet again!
Going to see Wes Anderson speak about The Fantastic Mr. Fox tonight . Stimulating Q&A! Film nerdery! Open bar! Check out this video below about the "making-of" the stop-motion animation film. You'll learn that 18.5 TBs of footage was shot (for realz??), how Anderson directs from a quaint flat in Paris, and that the producer of the film has a voice like Billy Barty, among other interesting production tidbits.
I'm late to the game on this one (late for at least 710,010 followers ), but you must start following shitmydadsays, which is written by Justin Halpern, a 29 year old, California-based rando who recently moved back in with his parents. By simply tweeting the snarky remarks his 73 year old dad makes, this guy landed a book deal AND an option deal with CBS. Holy jackpot. He's only been tweeting since AUGUST?? Here are some of my faves:
"The baby will talk when he talks, relax. It ain't like he knows the cure for cancer and he just ain't spitting it out."12:51 PM Oct 22ndfrom web
"Just pay the parking ticket. Don't be so outraged. You're not a freedom fighter in the civil rights movement. You double parked."12:59 PM Oct 18thfrom web "That woman was sexy...Out of your league? Son. Let women figure out why they won't screw you, don't do it for them."12:10 PM Oct 12thfrom web "My flight lands at 9:30 on Sunday...You want to watch what? What the fuck is mad men? I'm a mad man if you don't pick me the hell up."5:42 PM Aug 15thfrom web
Based on the second half of the trailer for the upcoming flick, Brothers seems like the serious, dramatic interpretation of annoying TBS comedy of errors, While You Were Sleeping. Yes, no, maybe so? Not really sure about the casting. Tobey and Jake I get... Natalie Portman as a military wife? Don't buy it. But, I'll reserve judgment for now.
At 40 Great Jones Street today! I bought pink peppercorn, gingerbread, and salted caramel macarons at the artist, Will Cotton's baking/art event. Don't miss the stunning and eye-catching painting of an Aphrodite-like model in the buff splayed out on top of a puffy cloud of pink cotton candy!
Season 4 hasn't been a favorite for some critics, but despite the weak plot lines, I still look forward to watching 30 Rock on Hulu... Not exactly must-see, nix plans TV, but entertaining nonetheless...Here is a Top 10 list of Tina Fey's favorite jokes written for the show. Giggle.
Wes Anderson's trailer for the upcoming stop-motion animation film The Fantastic Mr. Fox is being screened before the snoozefest , Where the Wild Things Are. Now, I don't wanna be a hater, but on the big screen the movement of the characters--particularly when talking--seemed choppy to the point of distraction, as if the audio and picture were out of sync. It's probably the stop-motion and I shouldn't expect the same fluidity as a Pixar film. I believe Coraline was all stop-motion too and didn't suffer from the same problems. Well, I'm still psyched to see the film, as I've always admired the charming details, visual humor and stylized sensibility of Anderson's films.
